Musher Registration and Spaghetti Feed will again be Friday eve, and the actual race takes place Saturday January 12 and Sunday January 13, 2009.Rather than the 10 dog pro teams turning around on the trail back to Deer River, they will instead continue onto the towns of Effie, Bigfork, and Marcell! This is an expansion of the event to incorporate three more towns in this "neck of the woods"! Now all six towns have the challenge of being responsible for the purse $ to not only attract a similar 62 teams as it was in 2006, but more entries, estimated to 87 teams!! It's a perfect opportunity for all six towns to have a wonderful Winter Fest in conjunction with this particular weekend offering going through! It's an opportunity for every group in town to make it a fabulous weekend! We had 77 teams all registered and all plans were in place - but no snow!!!! The Planning Meetings are starting again Sept. 2009 with a potluck supper starting between 6-6:30 with meeting following. Meetings take place the third Thursday of the month, at White Oak Great Hall on Hwy 6, 1 mile north of Deer River. This gathering needs representatives from each of the 6 towns to brainstorm together how they'd like to see this happening and how each can help their community get ready and learn from others.
White Oak's Sled Dog Classic This year of 2008, we honored Ed Valek and his family's love of not only the White Oak Rendezvous, but also this Sled Dog Event! He and his wife Diane Valek, of Grand Rapids, assisted in the preparations and carry through of Musher Registrations the first two years, and many more responsibilities! This year Ed will be very much missed! His August 31, 2006 unexpected death after complications following the weeks after his gall bladder surgery in August following the rendezvous! This year we welcomed Ed & Diane's daughter Laura, who was taking her Dad's place with her Mother to keep Ed's legacy alive here at White Oak! There was a recognition time of rememberance of Ed's life and love of the White Oak Sled Dog classic at the very beginning of the event Saturday, January 13, 2007 before the 10 a.m. start. Diane partake in the first sled out to mark the scent for the official beginning of this year's event! Following her, were the "Trophy Class" and the "Rec Class". Following afterwards was the 6 Dog Pro and 10 Dog Pro from the Rendezvous stage. From the Rendezvous stage , the two beginning classes go to the Gosh Dam Place, at the corner of #46 and "9". The Trophy class has a two hour mandatory rest period, and will continue to Squaw Lake Community Center, whereas the Rec class ends at Gosh Dam Place. the two professional teams go straight past Gosh Dam, through Squaw Lake, ending in Northome! At Northome at the Senior Center, there will be a "free will" Chili Feed that evening starting at 6 p.m., put on by St. Michael's church as a fundraiser! The cafe in Northome will be open until midnight. Effie Cafe is also expected to be ready for lots of late night hungry people on the corner of 1 & 38 at the corner of the teams' rest spot! The Effie Community Center where the dog teams will be resting will offer food, restrooms, and a place for mushers to catch a wink during their layover. The 130 mile "overnight" run will be for 10 dog professional teams! They will be continuuing on past Northome this year, and straight ahead to new trails towards Effie, Bigfork and Marcell! They will also go through the Gosh Dam Place Crossing, on to Squaw Lake and to Northome. They will have a chance to rest the mandated time in either Northome or Effie, and will take off in the middle of the night for their completion of the race onto Effie, Bigfork, and Marcell. Get involved in the fun! Volunteers needed! If you'd like to help in any fashion, leave your name, number, and interested area you'd be willing to help with. Call the White Oak office at 218-246-9393 to leave your name and number so we can get back to you! This third year brought out new volunteers that are very much appreciated and everyone had a fun time! Two weekends after this awesome opportunity for the dog teams to practice and get prepared, is the annual Beargrease Race out of Duluth!! (They also canceled in 2007 due to no snow also! We anticipate this next year's event to be spectacular!! Don't miss it! The "White Oak Sled Dog Classic" buttons can be purchased as a souvenir, as well as a fund raiser, and helps spread the word! Saturday 6 - 9: a.m. we'll offer a Pancake Breakfast in the Great Hall, open to the public! $5, and children 10 & under $3, and toddlers free. We also have concessions at Dad's Tavern to keep you warmed up and lunch available throughout Saturday! Click Here for more information or Contact Dan Bergerson at dbergerson@mnpower.com. on Sled Dog Event Participation.

Since our Rummage Sale in April, our balance is down to $7,600!
