It's a go for the Sixth Annual White Oak Dog Sled Classic!  It will be a dog sled event celebrating the "Northern Minnesota Winters", as well as "Reliving Our Fur Trade Era" history when dog sled teams were a necessity for survival! Friday night from 4-7 p.m. come to "Meet the Mushers" and support White Oak's Spaghetti Feed! Prices are $7 for adults, $4 for 12 & under. The race itself will get underway Saturday at 9:30 a.m., at the White Oak Fur Post, specifically at the Rendezvous front stage.  The actual race begins with a Memorial Opening. This sixth year will again include"Purses" for prizes for the 6-Dog and 10 Dog Professional Teams. For the "Bob Lundeen Memorial Classic Champion", the first place prize is a brand new Blackpowder Rifle, purchased by Pat Richards, in honor of Bob Lundeen's Legacy as a "White Oak Sled Dog Classic" Supporter! This particular event, starting in 2005, was "His Baby" for the city of Deer River. As Mayor and Chief of Police, he took great pride at being totally involved from the beginning to end. He was instrumental in getting state troopers, local police, sheriffs, search & rescue, and the Grand Rapids Ham Radio Operators involved. He had so much fun working on it, that his memory lives on in all of us, and he is greatly missed. "His Race" will be announced and started Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m., and prizes will be awarded Saturday Evening at 6 p.m. at the Squaw Lake Community Center. This 40 mile run, with a two hour rest-layover at Gosh Dam Place, will be finishing in Squaw Lake, and is intended for beginners and hobbiests.  It has been recommended that a 20 mile opportunity be included again, for beginners, to encourage everyone who wants to participate and have fun with their dogs !

This year of 2008, we honored Ed Valek and his family's love of not only the White Oak Rendezvous, but also this Sled Dog Event! He and his wife Diane Valek, of Grand Rapids, assisted in the preparations and carry through of Musher Registrations the first two years, and many more responsibilities! This year Ed will be very much missed! His August 31, 2006 unexpected death after complications following surgery. There was a recognition time of rememberance of Ed's life and love of the White Oak Sled Dog classic. Following, were the "Trophy Class" and the "Rec Class". Following afterwards was the 6 Dog Pro and 10 Dog Pro from the Rendezvous stage. 2009 honory was the son of a musher family that passed away, and 2010, Jamie Nelson, was honored for her lifelong love of sled dogs and their people, which she continues to train, even in her retirement years. she has many years experience in the John Beargrease in Duluth, and three times completed the 1200 miles at the Idarid Sled Dog Race in Alaska! We are proud to have her "blessings" for establishing the White Oak Classic in her "Neck of the Woods" - northern Minnesota!

From the Rendezvous stage , the two beginning classes go to the Gosh Dam Place, at the corner of #46 and "9". The Trophy class has a two hour mandatory rest period, and will continue to Squaw Lake Community Center, whereas the Rec class ends at Gosh Dam Place. the two professional teams go straight past Gosh Dam, through Squaw Lake, ending in Northome! At Northome at the Senior Center, there will be a "free will" Chili Feed that evening starting at 6 p.m., put on by St. Michael's church as a fundraiser! The cafe in Northome will be open until midnight. Effie Cafe is also expected to be ready for lots of late night hungry people on the corner of 1 & 38 at the corner of the teams' rest spot! The Effie Community Center where the dog teams will be resting will offer food, restrooms, and a place for mushers to catch a wink during their layover.

The 130 mile "overnight" run will be for 10 dog professional teams! They will be continuuing on past Northome this year, and straight ahead to new trails towards Effie, Bigfork and Marcell! They will also go through the Gosh Dam Place Crossing, on to Squaw Lake and to Northome. They will have a chance to rest the mandated time in either Northome or Effie, and will take off in the middle of the night for their completion of the race onto Effie, Bigfork, and Marcell.

Get involved in the fun! Volunteers needed! If you'd like to help in any fashion, leave your name, number, and interested area you'd be willing to help with. Call the White Oak office at 218-246-9393 to leave your name and number so we can get back to you! This third year brought out new volunteers that are very much appreciated and everyone had a fun time!

Two weekends after this awesome opportunity for the dog teams to practice and get prepared, is the annual Beargrease Race out of Duluth!! (They also canceled in 2007 due to no snow also! We anticipate this next year's event to be spectacular!! Don't miss it! The "White Oak Sled Dog Classic" buttons can be purchased as a souvenir, as well as a fund raiser, and helps spread the word!

We also have concessions at Dad's Tavern to keep you warmed up and lunch available throughout Saturday!

110.) It helps to have those particular groups’ lunches together beforehand  (to carry to picnic area.)

1111.)We prefer to keep the groups smaller, ie 9 - 12 maximum. This assures a great day for everyone!

There's been requests to offer set up thruout Mon - Thurs., for the main front area, the entire day.

Last year people were asked if they'd mind, and the main field folks didn't, so maybe we should try that, but leave the "back meadow" for those "family camps" that want the privacy & quiet, and keep the early a.m. and later p.m. for that area.

We sure do appreciate help in the last minute chores, but want to respect the quiet times for those that take time off work to relax & get away. We will keep to the stated quiet times for quiet, and do noisy chores during "drive-in" times. This will meet everyone's needs we are thinking.

As far As far as trading goods and camps inside the Rendezvous site, please continue with the

respecrespect  we’ve earned at keeping as period perfect as you can. We know how long it takes to collectcollect and afford everything to be replicas, or the real thing, but please don’t push

anyboanybodies’ buttons by carelessly showing any plastics, fake furs, aluminum cans, coolers,

fabricsobvious, artificial fabrics, or any nonperiod items like watches & cigarettes, that do not fit

into thinto the two hundred year period  of history that our Rendezvous celebrates, which has always been in the timeframe between 1640’s – 1840’s. Even your kitchen items displayed should be tin wastin wash basins and storage containers, items made of pewter, copper, period looking glass, china,  china,or pottery items. And of course wooden boxes, pails, tables, and trunks for storage and caand carrying, as well as baskets. Whatever is concealed inside and unseen by wandering eyes iseyes is your own business. But nothing inappropriate must show. This is a celebration of historyhistory, and that’s what people come for! We continue to strive for a quality event that peoplepeople expect when they come to White Oak.  Thank you for thinking this over, and keeping every everyone happy.

SEPTEMBER

Board Nominations are due in writing, at the monthly September meeting, the first Thursday of the month.

We will have openings, one being Mary Jean Ogee, who has served White Oak for 8 full years in many capacities. She is still willing to assist with some of the tasks she's taken on, but pretty much on the sideline/home office duties.

Email to whiteoak@paulbunyan.net for additions to the next monthly meeting - Annual meeting will be the third thursday in October, as stated in the bylaws. Voting for the 2010 Bd Openings takes place at/by this October Annual meeting.
