Notice: Race is Officially Canceled Due to Lack of Snow

We have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2012 White Oak Dog Sled Race due to lack of snow on the trail. All registered mushers will receive a refund of their registration fees. “Stationing ourselves outside Granada in the company of many thousands of allied combatants, we prepared ourselves for the final grand siege of Granada itself. The siege was to last 8 months until, broken by our incessant attacks and their own internal conflicts amongst commanders, Granada finally fell. Due to our pride in what was believed to be participation in a righteous war, as well as our relatively low casualties, Captain von Degen adopted the common phrase of “do right and fear no man” as the Willensstark company motto. The date at the beginning of the siege was April of the year 1491.”

Join The White Oak Society in a celebration of winter, history, and canine companions! An 18 mile sprint race up to the famous Gosh Dam Place.

The fun starts at the White Oak Historical Site just north of Deer River, Minnesota. Food, frenzy and fur.

Vet check-ins will be from noon to seven pm on Friday January 20th. Race begins on Saturday morning.

Everyone is welcome to attend!

Spaghetti Dinner on Friday evening. Wake up with the dogs and have breakfast with the White Oak Society Saturday morning. We’ve got you covered for lunch too with coffee, cider, hot dogs, chili, chips and more.

Important Notice: Due to lack of snowfall, a decision will be made by the White Oak Dog Sled Race Planning Committee on Saturday, January 14, as to whether or not to hold the race.  If the race should be cancelled, all registered mushers will be notified, and their registration fees will be refunded.

Volunteers needed: Persons interested in portraying 15th century medieval soldiers, 18th Century Voyageurs, and 18th Century Native Americans.

The White Oak Society based in Deer River MN is now seeking volunteers to portray 15th century medieval soldiers, 18th Century Voyageurs, and 18th Century Native Americans.

We have many positions available. All those with a love for history, acting, or just looking for something fun and different to do please apply today.

NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED. If you have an interest in 15th Century medieval soldiers, the medieval period, or the 18th century North American Fur Trade and Revolutionary War, then you have found the right place. Don’t worry, you don’t have to have an in-depth knowledge of history to get involved, just an interest.

We can help with research, clothing, and best of all, active interpreters get to be fed at our events!! How about some of Broken Toe’s famous pea soup? Or maybe some medieval pottage from the Willensstark camp cook. Get involved in a fun, educational, and family oriented organization dedicated to celebrating history.
