About the Learning Center |
Q. How do you approach some of the controversial issues that were part of life in the fur trading era, such as abuses to the environment, use of firearms, inequality between men and women, etc.? A. This is an important question to us. Since we are trying to recreate an historical era, it is certain that we are going to present issues that will be sensitive to many people. While trying to present activities of the time accurately, we also try to present the issues with care and thought. If someone has strong beliefs along particular lines, such as trapping of animals for fur, we will try to make accommodations. Another example is the use of tobacco. This was an important trade good and a key part of the voyageur's daily life. White Oak will display the smoking and trading of tobacco. White Oak will, especially in presentations to children, indicate that the health dangers of tobacco were not known in the 1700's. Also, most people did not live long enough to feel the damage of tobacco to their health. Q.Do you have any information you can send us that will help us in our fund raising efforts for our White Oaks trip? A. If possible we would be glad to come to your school and discuss our program with your staff. In presenting the "spirit of the voyageur", we help you motivate and prepare the group for this adventure. We also have a video tape you may borrow. Please contact the White Oak Learning Centre director. |
